All the Light We Cannot See: A Novel

Anthony Doerr

WINNER OF THE PULITZER PRIZE

From the highly acclaimed, multiple award-winning Anthony Doerr, the beautiful, stunningly ambitious instant New York Times bestseller about a blind French girl and a German boy whose paths collide in occupied France as both try to survive the devastation of World War II.

Marie-Laure lives with her father in Paris near the Museum of Natural History, where he works as the master of its thousands of locks. When she is six, Marie-Laure goes blind and her father builds a perfect miniature of their neighborhood so she can memorize it by touch and navigate her way home. When she is twelve, the Nazis occupy Paris and father and daughter flee to the walled citadel of Saint-Malo, where Marie-Laure’s reclusive great-uncle lives in a tall house by the sea. With them they carry what might be the museum’s most valuable and dangerous jewel.

In a mining town in Germany, the orphan Werner grows up with his younger sister, enchanted by a crude radio they find. Werner becomes an expert at building and fixing these crucial new instruments, a talent that wins him a place at a brutal academy for Hitler Youth, then a special assignment to track the resistance. More and more aware of the human cost of his intelligence, Werner travels through the heart of the war and, finally, into Saint-Malo, where his story and Marie-Laure’s converge.

Doerr’s “stunning sense of physical detail and gorgeous metaphors” (San Francisco Chronicle) are dazzling. Deftly interweaving the lives of Marie-Laure and Werner, he illuminates the ways, against all odds, people try to be good to one another. Ten years in the writing, a National Book Award finalist, All the Light We Cannot See is a magnificent, deeply moving novel from a writer “whose sentences never fail to thrill” (Los Angeles Times).

1) The light within - It has been a while since I have found a book that I wanted to read slowly so that I could soak in every detail in hopes that the last page seems to never come.

When reading the synopsis of this novel, I never imagined that I would feel so connected to a book where one of the main characters is blind and the other a brilliant young German orphan who was chosen to attend a brutal military academy under Hitler's power using his innate engineering skills.

This novel was so much more than the above states. The idiosyncrasies of each individual character are so well defined and expressed in such ways that come across the page almost lyrically. I was invited into the pages and could not only imagine the atmosphere, but all of my senses were collectively enticed from the very first page until the last.

I was so amazed with the way that the author was able to heighten all my senses in a way that I felt like I knew what it was like to be blind. In most well-written books you get of a sense of what the characters look like and follow them throughout the book almost as if you are on a voyage, but with this novel, I could imagine what it was like to be in Marie-Laure's shoes. The descriptives were so beautifully intricate that I could imagine the atmosphere through touch and sound. It was amazing, really.

There were so many different aspects of the book that are lived out in separate moments and in different countries that find a way to unite in the end. What impressed me most was that I could have never predicted the outcome. It was as though all cliches were off the table and real life was set in motion. Life outside of books can be very messy and the author stayed true to life but in a magical and symbolic way.

I have said in other reviews that just when I think that I have read my last book centered around the Second World War, another seems to pop up. I should emphasize that this book created an image of war in a way that I have never imagined before. I truly got a sense of what it must have been like for children who lived a happy life and then suddenly were on curfew and barely had food to eat. It also showed the side of young children who are basically brainwashed by Nazi leaders and made into animals who seem to make choices that they normally wouldn't in order to survive. And by survive, I mean dodging severe abuse by their own colleagues.

This book may haunt me for some time. I can't express enough how beautifully written the pages are. I highly recommend this read as it is my favorite so far for 2014.

2) One of the best books you'll read this year. Beautiful! - ALL THE LIGHT WE CANNOT SEE is one of the best books you’ll read this year. On one hand, the title implies the lessons learned by a young German orphan boy about radio waves. On the other hand, as the author describes it, “It’s also a metaphorical suggestion that there are countless invisible stories still buried within World War II.” Add in a newly blinded French girl who is forced to leave her familiar surroundings, and you’ll soon find yourself in literary heaven.

The layered meanings run deep in this book. No wonder nearly every advanced review uses the word “intricate” to describe this masterpiece. The German boy and his sister discover an old radio, where they hear science lessons from afar. There are lessons about the brain, sitting inside the darkness of our skull, interpreting light; there are lessons about coal having been plants living millions of years ago, absorbing light, now buried in darkness; lessons about light waves that we cannot see—all applicable as the story unfolds.

Readers will appreciate the short, almost lyrical chapters of alternating characters. The author helps by italicizing earlier mentioned quotes and then leaving almost every chapter closing with a message to ponder. Take for example: “a real diamond is never perfect”, “open your eyes and see what you can with them before they close forever”, and “the entropy of a closed system never decreases”. All of this is explained in a natural way, but never given out in an assuming manner. The story flows and draws your heart into its deep meaning.

Having personal connections to both veterans of World War II and members of the blind community, I can attest to the authenticity of this story’s writing. Author Anthony Doerr brings out lovely characters, along with their own fascinations: seashell collecting, bird watching, locksmithing, electronics, and geology. The history surrounding these personal stories is real and deep. You will fall in love.

The author also includes connections to the song Clair de Lune, the book 20,000 LEAGUES UNDER THE SEA, and a fictional story about a priceless diamond called the Sea of Flames, whose owner “so long as he keeps it, the keeper of the stone will live forever.”

I cannot proclaim loud enough how much this book means to me; I have been left awe-inspired. So, thank you to Scribner for making this book available for me to review. It has been an honor.

Memory Man (Amos Decker series)

David Baldacci

With over 110 million copies of his novels in print, David Baldacci is one of the most widely read storytellers in the world. Now he introduces a startling, original new character: a man with perfect memory who must solve his own family's murder.

MEMORY MAN

Amos Decker's life changed forever--twice.

The first time was on the gridiron. A big, towering athlete, he was the only person from his hometown of Burlington ever to go pro. But his career ended before it had a chance to begin. On his very first play, a violent helmet-to-helmet collision knocked him off the field for good, and left him with an improbable side effect--he can never forget anything.

The second time was at home nearly two decades later. Now a police detective, Decker returned from a stakeout one evening and entered a nightmare--his wife, young daughter, and brother-in-law had been murdered.
His family destroyed, their killer's identity as mysterious as the motive behind the crime, and unable to forget a single detail from that horrible night, Decker finds his world collapsing around him. He leaves the police force, loses his home, and winds up on the street, taking piecemeal jobs as a private investigator when he can.

But over a year later, a man turns himself in to the police and confesses to the murders. At the same time a horrific event nearly brings Burlington to its knees, and Decker is called back in to help with this investigation. Decker also seizes his chance to learn what really happened to his family that night. To uncover the stunning truth, he must use his remarkable gifts and confront the burdens that go along with them. He must endure the memories he would much rather forget. And he may have to make the ultimate sacrifice.

MEMORY MAN will stay with you long after the turn of the final page.

1) DAVID BALDACCI INTRODUCES A NEW CHARACTER, AMOS DECKER! - With Split Second (2003), David Baldacci created the fictional characters of Sean King and Michelle Maxwell, and went on to write five other intriguing and highly entertaining novels in the King & Maxwell series. In 2005, he introduced four unlikely partners in The Camel Club with the series known by the same name. Then the A. Shaw series came with The Whole Truth in 2008 which was about the exploits of a secret band of highly trained agents. In 2011, Baldacci gave his readers a new hero in the form of John Puller with Zero Day. The year 2012 witnessed the birth of another character, a ruthless stone-cold hitman, Will Robie in The Innocent. Interspersed in between were some exciting and delightful stories directed towards young readers, all of which were well-received.

His latest offering, Memory Man, introduces yet another character who is unlike anything you’ve read before. Amos Decker is an ex-football star and a highly decorated ex-cop. Life has a way of dealing cruel and harsh blows. Decker was a promising footballer, but it was cut short by an accident he met as a twenty-two year-old NFL rookie. The injury opened a new chapter in his life, resulting in a condition of possessing an extremely detailed autobiographical memory wherein he forgets nothing. The grisly murders of his loved ones left him directionless. But the chance arrest of Sebastian Leopold who was suspected of being involved in a mass shooting at the local high school brought the cold case back to life, and reunited Decker with his former partner, detective Mary Lancaster, and they had to dig deep to bring the two cases to its logical conclusion.

Memory Man by David Baldacci is an exciting, fast-paced thriller which fans of Baldacci’s other series will enjoy. There is enough suspense in the book which will keep you going all the way to the end. In Amos Decker, Baldacci has created a fascinating character while Mary Lancaster is as wonderful. The plot is wonderfully conceived, and the ending will leave you delightfully satisfied. I wonder how the character of Amos Decker will evolve in the next book in the series. Though he's not your ideal hero I'm sure you'll still root for him!

#Received advance uncorrected proof reading copy in exchange for my honest review.

2) Cautiously Recommended To Other Baldacci Fans. - I have always been a big fan of David Baldacci's writing and have stated in other reviews I've written that "I've never read a bad book written by him", however this one comes close to making a liar out of me, but that's just my opinion.

I found the story "intriguing" on the one hand, and "plodding" on the other as it seemed to lack the vitality of Mr. Baldacci's past works almost as if it had been "ghost written", (no I'm not accusing, just stating an opinion), by someone who just did not quite grasp David Baldacci's writing style.

Now I come to the hard question of recommending it and to that I will say that I "cautiously" recommend this book as the premise of the story is good and it is an interesting read, it was, (at least for me), not what I had expected which was another "page turner".

If this is, and I'm certain it will be, another series then it needs to be improved on.

I would be curious to know from Mr. Baldacci where he came up with the premise for this as I think that may be an even better story.

Killing Patton: The Strange Death of World War II's Most Audacious General

Readers around the world have thrilled to Killing Lincoln, Killing Kennedy, and Killing Jesus--riveting works of nonfiction that journey into the heart of the most famous murders in history. Now from Bill O’Reilly, anchor of The O’Reilly Factor, comes the most epic book of all in this multimillion-selling series: Killing Patton.
General George S. Patton, Jr. died under mysterious circumstances in the months following the end of World War II. For almost seventy years, there has been suspicion that his death was not an accident--and may very well have been an act of assassination. Killing Patton takes readers inside the final year of the war and recounts the events surrounding Patton’s tragic demise, naming names of the many powerful individuals who wanted him silenced.

SAMPLE CUSTOMER REVIEWS -

1) A solid murder mystery, in O'Reilly style - There are no less than a half-dozen theories about General Patton's death and countless books on the subject, so where does In Killing Patton: The Strange Death of World War II's Most Audacious General by Bill O'Reilly fit in? Much of the same ground that has already been crossed before: from Josef Stalin to "Wild Bill" Donovan and Douglas Bazata, an OSS operative whose story has been discredited and debunked, O'Reilly's book seems to follow many of the threads in Robert Wilcox's 2010 book Target: Patton -- The Plot to Assassinate General George S. Patton. But this book has plenty to offer.

O'Reilly and his editors do a decent job of tying in much of the history preceding Patton's death and attempts to find every angle on Patton's death. However, all it has ever been found to be was a tragic and unfortunate accident between a truck and Patton's limo. Nonetheless the mysterious death of one of our most high-profile generals is a hard thing to ignore.

If anything, the book, as many of O'Reilly's other ones in the Killing series, serves as a general historical overview piece, albeit one with mystery and intrigue laced into it in attempts to keep the reader engaged. Though it is styled to be a work of nonfiction, it sensationalizes a contoversial ending of a greater-than-life individual who was both idolized and rankled by the people, military, and government.

A good casual read if you have read and like O'Reilly's Killing series books. Note there are plenty other books too, for those who are into finding out more about Patton's history and the conspiracy theory books on his death will have to look somewhere else.

2) Patton Revisited - General G.S. Patton's life and times were pretty well defined for many decades based on the book Courage & Valor, and the related Oscar winning award movie "Patton" starring G. C. Scott, and the lesser known movie "Patton's last days'. That is up until now with this new page flipping book.

In my opinion, there hasn't been much thought of Patton in the past decades. He was an early 20th century military hero whom fought in both the WW's in Europe and was instrumental for the success on the western allied front in WWII. General G.S. Patton was a controversial, aggressive leader who commanded forces to victories in North Africa, Sicily and the Western front post D-Day.
He gave America and Western forces hope by being among the 1st to face off with Nazi forces in North Africa and win, and he continued on up till the Elba River to be the most successful General for the western allied forces.

George Patton, a dynamic and controversial military leader who wore ivory-handled revolvers and flashy uniforms commanded the US 3rd Army, which cut a swathe through France after D-Day leading to the liberation of Paris. But his ambition to get to Berlin before Soviet forces was halted by Dwight D. Eisenhower (supreme allied commander & future President) who diverted Patton's petrol supplies to the more cautious British General Bernard Montgomery. Patton, believed Eisenhower wrongly prevented him from closing the so-called Falaise Gap in the autumn of 1944, allowing hundreds of thousands of German troops to escape to fight again. This led to the deaths of thousands of Americans during the Nazi winter counter-offensive that became known as the Battle of the Bulge.

Patton the perpetual warrior was assigned to restore German Bavaria after the Nazi surrender, and as usual strived for progress. He believed in using former Nazi officials and captured troops to begin the rebuilding of Germany. Although very effective, he stepped on too many toes with the upper allied Brass. He strongly believed that another war was possible with the Soviet Union, and his opinion lead to losing command of the 3rd Army and reassignment to the 15th Army (a small Historical Unit).

It was all over for Patton and he planned a permanent vacation back home to the States, when the bizarre happened. A day before his departure he was involve in a Traffic accident leaving him permanently paralyzed. He died shortly thereafter from the resulting complications of the neck fracture.

There has been lesser known books written to expose a conspiracy to the facts behind his dead implicating the USSR down to Eisenhower; however, these theories never hit the mainstream until now.

Mr. O'Reilly will take you into uncharted water regarding the circumstances and suspicion behind the untimely death of GS Patton. The book clips along with unknown events and facts regarding the remaining post war months of GS Patton and his demise. The book as usual can't be put down, and Mr. O'Reilly's big step into conspiracy
theory starts here.
